Important Information on Dialing India
(ਪੰਜਾਬੀ)
Thousands of accidental calls to 9-1-1 are made each year by residents attempting to dial New Delhi, India. This is because the area code for India is "91" and the city code for New Delhi is "11." It's simple to see how easily someone could dial 9-1-1 accidentally by forgetting to dial the international prefix of "011" before the country and city codes. Please remember to dial "011" first.
If you dial 9-1-1 accidentally, stay on the line and advise the call-taker. If you hang up, the call-taker is required to call you back. If that call-taker cannot reach you or a busy signal is heard, the call-taker will send police.
Misdialed calls tie up emergency lines and police resources. Thank you for your assistance!
